Knight's Tale

Myth and Medusa is a 2D animated short retelling of Ovid’s interpretation of the character Medusa. In this version, Medusa is a priestess to the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva. One night, Neptune, the god of the sea, visited Medusa at the temple and attempted to seduce her. When she refuses his advances, he rapes her (off-screen in the short). Later that night, Minerva herself comes to the temple. Minerva’s acolytes were to remain virgins, and Medusa had sex within the temple (albeit forced). Unable to take revenge on Neptune, she transforms Medusa into the creature of legend.

Knight Party is a project created between March and May 2019 over about 9 weeks by a group of students at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Contributions

Co-Director
Worked closely with my co-director to focus on bringing more emotion out of the story while staying within the
strict guidelines and time restrictions of the projects and helping push the collaborating artists’ talents to their fullest potential.

Storyboard Artist
Created drawings to visualize the provided script in order to most effectively tell the story. This included rough world and character design, appropriate camera angles, and adding additional details to make the story flow properly. On this show, one third of the way through production, the second half of the script was scrapped and reworked. I was tasked with storyboarding the entire second half of the film making sure not to use any additional assets.
Previz Lead
Based on the storyboards, the whole animated short was timed out and recreated as an animatic in Toon Boom’s Storyboard Pro. Working with the co-director, camera moves were added, shot timing worked out and story issues ironed out.
Character Modeling, Texturing and Setup (Rigging) on the Knight
Using model sheets created by our character designer, I converted the 2D drawings into a fully 3D character model using Maya and Photoshop. The character was then rigged to be both easily animated and designed to mimic all of the different expressions both required by the story and shown in the concept art.
Look Development
I developed a technique using a combination of filters in After Effects that allowed us to render our character in real-time with a cell shaded effect, saving the production hours’ worth of rendering.

Layout Lead
Once the environmental assets were created, I set up the base files (imported all files and set up cameras) in Maya for nearly 80% of the film.

Animation Lead
In addition to creating animation for the knight in three shots, I supervised all of the shots that included the Knight character. All the animation in the film was completed in less than four weeks.
Compositor / Render Wrangler
Responsible for assembling every shot in the film in order to blend together 2D and 3D elements into a cohesive whole. This included everything from adding backgrounds, adding shadows, color grading, and adding strategic blurs to fake depth of field and guide the viewers’ eyes. One shot required tracking 3D camera to match a 2D animation which was then combined with another 3D shot where one character picks up the other.
Other Contributions
Created UV layouts and temporary textures for the castle and bridge environments. Used and modified existing assets to expand the world to fill in backgrounds for shots. Worked closely with the editor and 2D artists to help create the best possible short in the given time period.
